Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month. Is that actually a good deal?

Most people call it Gemini Pro. Here's what the plan includes, when the cheaper Plus plan is enough, and who doesn't need to pay at all.

The four Google AI plans

The thing people miss when they compare this with ChatGPT is the storage. Every Google AI plan is also a Google One plan, so Pro's $19.99 covers your Drive, Gmail and Photos too.

Is Pro worth it?

It depends on what else you'd pay for anyway. YouTube Premium Lite is $8.99 a month on its own, so if you were going to buy Lite or a big storage plan, the AI part of Pro costs you about $11. That's a good deal for Gemini 4 Argon, Deep Research, video generation and Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Chrome.

If you'd never use the storage or the YouTube perk, you're paying the full $19.99 for a chatbot, and then AI Plus at $4.99 makes more sense. It gets the Flash model, twice the free usage and 400 GB. For quick questions, emails and summaries, that's plenty. Ultra, at $99.99 and up, is really for people using it all day or making a lot of video.

Free for a year if you're a student

Google is giving US college students aged 18 and up a full year of AI Pro for free, as long as they claim it by December 31, 2026. You need a card on file, and it rolls into $19.99 a month when the year is up, so put a reminder in your calendar. One small catch: Google's help page says YouTube Premium Lite only kicks in on a paid plan, so don't expect it during the free year.

Sharing it with family

The 5 TB can be shared with up to five people in your Google family group, and Google says they get "select AI benefits" too. YouTube Premium Lite stays with the person paying. If the whole household wants ad-free YouTube, that's still a separate YouTube family plan.

What about the $2–$3.50 Gemini Pro deals?

Only the redeem link is one I'd consider: the plan lands on your own account and you never share a password. The pre-activated one is cheapest, about $2 a month, but your chats and files would live in an account someone else can log into. GamsGo also says Flow and Antigravity don't work, so assume you're getting Gemini and nothing else. I haven't bought it myself, so if you try it, start with three months.
