Spotify is checking who actually lives with you. Here's how the QR code check works

If someone on your Spotify family plan just got asked to scan a QR code, they're not alone. Here's what Spotify's rules say, what happens if the scan never happens, and what everyone on the plan pays once you do the math.

Spotify Family plan QR code check: scan the manager's phone in person within 7 days, or you can't join another Family or Duo plan for 12 months.

The short version

  • Since mid-October 2026, Spotify has been asking some Family plan members to scan a QR code on the manager's phone, in person.
  • Members get 7 days. Miss it and they can't join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months.
  • The code changes every few seconds, so a screenshot won't work. You have to be in the same room.
  • Family is $21.99 for up to 6 accounts, about $3.67 each if you fill it. For two people, Duo ($18.99) is cheaper.
  • For someone who lives elsewhere, the cheapest clean option is Student ($6.99, Hulu included). Otherwise it's Individual at $12.99.

What changed in October 2026

Spotify's Family plan has always been for people who live together. The sign-up page says it's for "up to 6 family members residing at the same address." For years, though, the main check was typing in an address, and plenty of families and friend groups shared one plan across different cities.

Around October 19, members started reporting a new prompt: verify you live with the plan manager by scanning a QR code. Spotify added a section about it to its help page, and on its third-quarter earnings call on October 22, co-CEO Alex Norström confirmed the change. He called it a "routine improvement" rather than a crackdown, and said tightening verification is ongoing work with no end date, since people keep finding holes in it.

He also said Family makes up a pretty significant share of Spotify's subscribers. That's the real reason this is happening. Every member who gets pushed off a shared plan is a potential $12.99 Individual customer.

And people noticed. In Google Trends, searches like "spotify family plan crackdown" and "spotify family plan qr code verification" are marked Breakout over the past 90 days, which means search interest grew more than 5,000%.

How the Spotify QR code verification works

Spotify's help page lays out the steps:

  1. The plan manager opens the QR code on their phone: tap your profile picture, then Your Premium, then Manage.
  2. The member scans it with their own phone's camera.
  3. Both people have to be in the same place. The code changes every few seconds.

A few details that trip people up:

What happens if you don't verify

You get 7 days from the notification. If the window passes or the scan doesn't work, Spotify's help page says you can't join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months. You can still sign up for another plan of your own.

The older address check, which arrives by email, works a little differently, and Spotify is more specific about it. You have 7 days to enter your full address. If it fails, your account switches to the free version of Spotify, with ads. You can rejoin the same Family or Duo plan, just not any other one for 12 months.

Spotify's QR code section doesn't say whether failing drops you to the free version right away, or whether you can rejoin the same plan later. Several news reports say members are moved to the free tier, but Spotify's page doesn't confirm that for the QR check. If it happens to you and you really do live there, contact Spotify support instead of waiting out the 12 months.

One more 12-month rule applies on top of all this: Family members can only change plans once every 12 months. So if you leave your family's plan to join a friend's, you're stuck with that choice for a year.

Duo has the same address rule. It's sold "for couples who reside at the same address," and Duo members get the same 7-day email check and the same 12-month restriction if it fails.

What the family plan costs per person

Spotify raised US prices in February 2026. Family went from $19.99 to $21.99, Duo from $16.99 to $18.99, and Individual from $11.99 to $12.99. Here's the family plan split by how many people actually use it:

Spotify Premium cost per person in the US: Individual $12.99, Duo $9.50 each, Family $21.99 split 3 ways $7.33, 4 ways $5.50, 5 ways $4.40, 6 ways $3.67, Student $6.99.
People in your homeEach paysNote
1$21.99Just buy Individual ($12.99)
2$11.00Duo is cheaper for two: $9.50 each
3$7.33
4$5.50
5$4.40
6$3.67The cheapest official price for Premium

Two things stand out. For a couple, Family is the wrong plan: Duo costs $18.99, or $9.50 each, and that's $3 a month less than Family. And from three people up, Family beats everything Spotify sells, including the Student plan.

Someone on your plan lives elsewhere. Now what?

This is the college kid in a dorm, the partner working in another city, the friend who's been on your plan since 2019. They don't need to wait for the QR code to show up. Their own options, from cheapest:

OptionPer monthCatch
Spotify Free$0Ads, limited skips, no downloads
Premium Student$6.99Includes Hulu (With Ads). Accredited college students only, re-verified every 12 months, up to 4 years
Reseller (GamsGo, own account)$7.49Third party, not sold by Spotify. No audiobooks. More below
Premium Individual$12.99None. New accounts get 1 month for $0

Students should go straight to Premium Student. Spotify verifies through SheerID, which can ask you to log in to your school portal or upload proof of enrollment, and it can take a few days. You can't pay for Student through your phone carrier, and the Hulu part is the With Ads plan.

If you've been a Premium subscriber for a while, look at your account page for a Basic plan. Spotify offers Basic Individual, Duo and Family to eligible existing Premium subscribers. They're the same as Premium minus the monthly audiobook hours. The help page doesn't list Basic prices (you'll see them on your account page), and once you cancel Basic you can't get it back.

What about resellers like GamsGo?

Resellers sell Spotify Premium for a lot less than Spotify does. I checked GamsGo's Spotify page while logged in on November 4, 2026. The option most people will want is Recharge to your own account (podcasts included): it upgrades your existing Spotify account to an Individual Premium plan, so your playlists and history stay put.

GamsGo says this is an Individual plan, not a seat in someone's family group, so the family QR check shouldn't apply. But the trade-offs are real:

I haven't bought Spotify through GamsGo myself yet, so treat the above as what the checkout shows, not a tested result. My GamsGo review covers how the site works in general, including the refund window. If you decide to try it, start with one month: GamsGo Spotify (referral link).

So what should you do?

FAQ

Is Spotify cracking down on family plans?

Yes. Since mid-October 2026, Spotify has been asking some Premium Family members to prove they live with the plan manager by scanning a QR code on the manager's phone. Spotify confirmed it on its October 22 earnings call, though its co-CEO called it a "routine improvement" rather than a crackdown.

What happens if I don't complete the Spotify QR code verification?

You get 7 days from the notification. If you miss the window or can't finish the scan, Spotify says you can't join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months. You can still pay for another plan, such as Individual or Student.

Can I rejoin my Spotify family plan after failing verification?

For the address check, yes: Spotify says a member who fails can join the same Family or Duo plan again, but not any other one for 12 months. Spotify's QR code instructions don't say either way, so ask support if this happens to you.

Does the Spotify QR code work from a screenshot?

No. Spotify says the code changes every few seconds and both people need to be in the same place, so a screenshot sent to someone in another city won't work.

How much is the Spotify family plan?

In the US it is $21.99 a month for up to 6 Premium accounts, up from $19.99 before the February 2026 price increase. Split six ways, that's about $3.67 per person.

Can Spotify Duo members live at different addresses?

No. Duo is sold "for couples who reside at the same address," and Duo members go through the same address check as Family members, with the same 7-day window and 12-month restriction.

Does Spotify track my location?

Spotify says it doesn't track your location and only checks your address. The QR code scan works because both phones have to be in the same place at the same time.

How often can I switch Spotify family plans?

Plan members can change plans once every 12 months, separate from the 12-month block after a failed verification.
